The 2S42 Lotos airborne self-propelled artillery gun has entered the troops to replace the 2S9 Nona-S self-propelled gun in the Airborne Forces and Marine Corps units. The Russian Ministry of Defense has named the main advantages of the system.
The Lotos gun fires both 120 mm shells and mortar ammunition. Thanks to the electronic guidance system, the gun is aimed at the target in 30 seconds.
The vehicle is capable of overcoming water obstacles and can also be parachuted. If the enemy launches a laser-guided missile, the self-propelled gun automatically activates a smoke generator. In a dense curtain, the ammunition loses its target.
«Lotos» was developed on the chassis of the BMD-4M airborne combat vehicle, the self-propelled gun can swim and be parachuted from an airplane. The heart of the machine is a 2B-06-2 diesel engine with a capacity of 450 hp. It will accelerate the equipment up to 70 km/h on roads and up to 40 km/h on rough terrain.
