Russian data centers may face a shortage of electricity for training neural networks, experts say.
The construction of large data centers is difficult because it is challenging to obtain the necessary power supply — the allocation of capacity can take more than a year.
The problem does not concern the entire country, but mainly Moscow, St. Petersburg, and some industrial regions. At the same time, other parts of Russia, on the contrary, are experiencing a surplus of electricity.
The reason for the high load is the use of powerful processors and video cards needed for AI training. In 2024, Russian data centers consumed about 1% of the power of the Unified Energy System of Russia, but forecasts indicate an increase of 30-40% per year, which could worsen the situation.
