Foreign agents may be prohibited from registering domain names in RuNet

The restrictions are aimed at combating cybercrime and protecting users online

Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy under the Federation Council Artyom Sheikin proposed restricting the issuance of domain names in RuNet to foreign agents. The civil servant appealed to the Ministry of Digital Development with an initiative to create a register of domain names with registration data. This will allow for the prompt blacklisting of fraudulent sites.

Cybersecurity experts recommend introducing restrictions on obtaining domain names in the RU, RF and SU zones for foreign agents and individuals from countries with which Russia has armed conflicts. This will help prevent the creation of phishing sites by unfriendly states

In his opinion, the data entered in the blacklist cannot be used to register domain names. The senator also believes that the accuracy of the data needs to be verified through the Unified Identification and Authentication System or other mechanisms.

The civil servant added that domain registration in RuNet has become one of the most uncontrolled zones used by fraudsters.
