The head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, announced the development of the "Amur-SPG" launch vehicle - the first Russian reusable medium-class system using methane as fuel.
The project is scheduled for implementation in 2030. Launches will be carried out from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Amur Region. A key feature will be the returnable first stage, which will allow the reuse of the main structural elements.
At the first stage, it is planned to create an experimental model of a reusable stage, known as the "grasshopper" or "hopper". Its tests should be completed by 2028.
The "Amur-SPG" belongs to the medium class, which makes it suitable for launching satellites and cargo missions into orbit. Methane engines are environmentally friendly - when burned, the fuel forms less soot and toxic compounds compared to kerosene. In addition, methane is cheaper. The return system of the first stage will help reduce the cost of launches by reusing components.
Earlierwww1.rureported that Roscosmos will begin testing the reusable "Amur-SPG" rocket using an experimental "hopper".
