Doctors of the microsurgical department of the Irkutsk Order of the Badge of Honor Regional Clinical Hospital have developed and patented a new bionic approach to hand reconstruction. Specialists of the GBUZ IOKB perform the largest number of operations in the country for endoprosthetics of small joints of the hand, master all types of limb reconstruction, and decided to add another technique to their arsenal.
Doctors use a bionic implant structure and connect it to the patient's tissues, preserving the natural mechanics of the hand. This reduces the rehabilitation period and preserves limb mobility.
The first operation using this technique was successful; it was performed almost twice as fast as with the old method of reconstructing this part of the human hand. It took about two hours instead of four to five hours. The patient was a man who had suffered a severe front-line wound that had immobilized his right hand. After a two-stage surgical intervention using a bionic approach to reconstructive surgery, on the third day he was already able to move his hand and grasp objects. Before the New Year, the patient was discharged home in satisfactory condition.
Doctors hope that their development will help preserve the quality of life for thousands of Russians who need such an operation. Most patients in the microsurgery department who need hand surgery are of working age, for whom it is important to preserve the function of the injured hand.
