The Russian government has approved a list of regions where the mining of digital currencies will be prohibited from January 1, 2025. Here are the details.
The restrictions, which are valid until March 15, 2031, apply to Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, as well as the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
In addition, temporary bans on mining will be introduced in some territories of the Irkutsk region, Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory during peak energy consumption periods. The goal of these measures is to maintain the balance of energy consumption, taking into account the needs of industry.
Experts note that the ban is associated not only with a shortage of electricity, but also with interregional cross-subsidization, when low tariffs in some regions are compensated for by others.
The timing of restrictions on cryptocurrency mining is synchronized with the end of the transition period for eliminating this benefit.
In his opinion, the lifting of bans is possible if there is sufficient capacity.
As a reminder, since November 2023, mining in Russia has been legalized, provided that it is registered with the Federal Tax Service.
