Cases of arson attacks on banks and administrative buildings have become more frequent in Russia. According to Sberbank, the number of such incidents increased by 30% before the New Year holidays.
Fraudsters, who began operating in early 2023, call victims who have already had money stolen and promise to return the funds in exchange for arson. In some cases, they offer a reward or claim that the arson will help catch the fraudsters. The perpetrators also ask to record the process on video. Most often, the victims are socially vulnerable groups, such as young people and pensioners.
The perpetrators are effectively zombifying people, especially on the eve of the New Year holidays.
In the past week, there have been numerous arson attacks in Russia, including attempted arson and ATM explosions. On December 22, more than ten attempted arson attacks and explosions were recorded in Moscow and the Moscow region in just one day.
