Buk-M3 9S36M illumination radars proved capable of detecting Luna-NG reconnaissance drone on the front: German UAV won't fly for long

It will be detected at a distance of about 30 km

Promising German Luna-NG reconnaissance UAVs may appear on the front. They have a take-off weight of 40 kg, an operating time of 8 hours, and an effective range of the command and telemetry radio channel within the radio horizon of about 100 km at an operating altitude of 5000 m.

The Luna-NG component base has multi-band electronic warfare modules for suppressing communication and data exchange channels. In this configuration, these UAVs may even surpass the Orlan-10 UAVs in the Leer-3 complexes.

Nevertheless, Luna-NG are equipped with engines in large and unshielded engine nacelles in the rear hemisphere, which have a large infrared signature.

The latter is easily detected by modern infrared homing heads of Verba MANPADS anti-aircraft missiles, R-73RDM-2 air combat missiles, as well as 10ES1 optoelectronic modules in the IR range of Pantsir-S1 complexes and other air defense systems. The effective reflecting surface of Luna-NG can reach 0.05 m², which allows them to be detected by 9S36M illumination radars of Buk-M3 complexes at a distance of about 30 km.
