MiG-31BM vs. Typhoon IPA2: Who Will Win the Air Duel?

Military Expert Damantsev: For the MiG-31BM in a fight, the Typhoon IPA2 should focus on R-37M missiles

The Russian MiG-31BM fighter in a duel at ultra-long range in air combat at distances of 230 - 160 km using the 8BM PFAR radar (RP-31AM) will be able to acquire the European multirole fighter Typhoon IPA2 for accurate auto-tracking at a distance of about 250 km in a simple jamming environment, as well as 200 – 190 km in a complex one, after which a single or paired launch of R-37M missiles can be carried out. This forecast for a theoretical air combat was given by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.

According to him, if the onboard electronic warfare equipment of the Typhoon IPA2 cannot suppress the receiving paths of the active radar homing heads of the R-37M missiles, the enemy fighter will be intercepted.

If they can, then the R-37Ms will go "into the milk" and after approaching 160 - 150 km, the Typhoon crew will be able to use MBDA Meteor air-to-air missiles, which are characterized by the presence of integrated ramjet engines, providing a flight speed of about 2.5M even in the far zone of the affected radius.

The MiG-31BM, which has low maneuverability and an RCS of more than 15 - 20 sq. m, will find it very difficult to "deceive" the active radar homing heads of Meteor missiles, not to mention escaping with the help of a maneuver. Therefore, the entire focus should be on interception with the help of the R-37M.

The aircraft is capable of tracking up to ten and engaging six air targets simultaneously. The modernization of the MiG-31 to the MiG-31BM level began in 2008. It was planned to modernize 114 machines by the end of 2023.
