Microturbine power plants for autonomous facilities of the Russian armed forces are developed by the Department of Electrical Engineering Complexes of Autonomous Facilities and Electric Transport of the National Research University "MPEI". The institute notes that the development of energy systems is very important for increasing the mobility and efficiency of the army, and makes a feasible contribution to it.
Microturbine power plants with steam or gas turbines are a more economical replacement for diesel generators. They have a significantly higher power-to-weight ratio (per kilogram of mass) compared to diesel generator sets. In microturbine plants, the basis is high-speed synchronous turbogenerators with excitation from permanent magnets with non-contact gas bearings.
A feature of the installation is the location of the turbine impeller on the same shaft as the generator inductor. The absence of a gearbox, the presence of only one moving part (rotating rotor) and high rotation speeds (tens-hundreds of thousands of rpm) determine the reliability of microturbines, their small weight and dimensions. The use of non-contact gas bearings eliminates the oil lubrication system, which significantly increases the service life of the power plant (up to 500 thousand start-stop cycles), and also simplifies its operation and routine maintenance.
Whether microturbines will be included in the list of export goods of Rosoboronexport is still unknown.
