At the St. Petersburg National Research Academic University named after Zhores Alferov (part of the consortium of the NTI Competence Center "Fontanka"), a method for creating components based on green LEDs has been developed. They are planned to be used for the first underwater optical system in Russia. This was reported by the press service of the NTI Competence Center "Fontanka".
The advantages of the new type of underwater communication are high data transfer rate, mobility, stealth, and the ability to simultaneously interact with multiple devices underwater. This communication method is more effective than hydroacoustic and electromagnetic counterparts.
Green light has minimal absorption in water and is suitable for these purposes. This type of communication will expand capabilities and complement existing ones, for example, in the waters of the Northern Sea Route.
Scientists have created a prototype of a green light-emitting device. It is based on nanowires and nanocrystals. The technology of growing these crystals made it possible to obtain green light.
Thanks to the use of filamentary crystals, it is possible to create sources of single photons, and this technology opens up new horizons for the integration of optical photonic elements with silicon technology, which can significantly increase the efficiency and functionality of light-emitting devices and bring closer the creation of domestic photonic integrated circuits.
The new technology has a chance of success in its niche due to the improved characteristics of green LEDs.
