The Russian S-500 "Prometheus" anti-aircraft missile system (part of the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces system) is "designed to destroy stealth aircraft (stealth technology) and intercontinental ballistic missiles." The main feature of the SAM system is its adaptability. India and China will be watching how Russia uses the S-500 "Prometheus", writes the Eurasian Times.
The publication points out that Russia has moved the S-500 to the south. According to the Eurasian Times, the Russian Armed Forces have one S-500 regiment, consisting of two divisions with two batteries each. Air defense systems of this type have several operational components, including command posts, radars, and launchers.
The publication notes that the first S-500s were deployed near Moscow in 2021. Serial production of "Prometheus" is scheduled to begin in 2025.
The air defense system represents an advanced achievement of Russian military technology, designed to counter growing threats. Like its predecessors, the adaptability of the S-500 is its main feature. The system can launch various types of missiles adapted to specific threats and operational requirements, which increases its versatility and effectiveness in combating changing air threats.
The radar and guidance systems of the S-500 are among the most advanced in the world, providing a range of up to 600 km. "Prometheus" can hit various targets, including hypersonic missiles and low-orbit satellites.
Eurasian Times writes that the S-500 uses several radar frequencies and tracks stealth aircraft. Thus, the SAM system poses a threat to the F-22 Raptor and F-35 stealth fighters manufactured by the United States.
According to the publication, India and China may be the first foreign customers of the S-500. Previously, both countries purchased S-400 SAM systems from Russia.
