Eight direct flights to seven Russian cities are planned to be launched from the modernized Sukhumi airport. This was announced by the President of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2024).
We think that this will increase the flow by at least 50 percent from the first year.
It is worth recalling that in October 2023, it was decided to reconstruct the Sukhumi airport, and the tender was won by the company "Infrastructure Development". The project involved the modernization of the airport's runway, which is 3100 m long and 45 m wide, as well as the renovation of the historical building and taxiway.
The airport is scheduled to open on December 31 of this year. The first flight and testing of the air harbor systems is scheduled for July.
Talks about launching flights from Abkhazia to Russia have been ongoing since 2019. Experts in the aviation industry emphasize that Russian airlines are cautious about the prospect of flights to the republic.
This is due to Western sanctions and the hope for their future mitigation. In addition, the destination is not highly profitable in the low season - only additional subsidies will help.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that new high-speed vessels will be able to deliver passengers from Crimea to Abkhazia in one trip.
