Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the foundations of state policy in the field of historical education by decree of May 8. This includes the creation of mechanisms for state and public control over the computer game market.
According to the decree, the state control mechanism will prevent the distribution of video games that distort the representation of events in Russian and world history. The Cabinet was instructed to develop an appropriate action plan, which will be supervised by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, as well as representatives of the FSB, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the SVR.
Experiment on labeling computer games
Control over the historical accuracy of games can be tested as part of an experiment on their labeling, suggested a source in the game market. The Ministry of Economic Development has been working on this system since 2023. It is likely to be launched this summer. The experiment will last a year and will be voluntary.
Among the companies that are likely to join are VK, Lesta Games, Cyberia Nova, 1C.
Another source suggested that Roskomnadzor will be responsible for regulating content and its distribution.
The founder of Moscow Digital School, Alexander Zhuravlev, said that the assessment of historical video games should take place with the involvement of developers and experts. He pointed out that some games present an alternative history, but it does not contradict ethical aspects.
