Nearly 18 million Russians have connected biometric profiles, said the head of the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia, Maksut Shadaev, during a speech at the Digital Astana 2024 forum in Kazakhstan.
According to him, such a profile can be considered comprehensively with other elements of citizen identification. It includes a digital ID (profile on Gosuslugi), which 110 million Russians have registered. This also includes an electronic signature, which is used by 10 million Russians.
Digital copies of documents are available to 19 million Russian citizens
The head of the department believes that over time, the biometric profile will help build a second system for identifying a Russian citizen. At the same time, it will be able to work online and offline.
In September 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the provisions on digital passport of a citizen. The digital version of the main document is a QR code in the Gosuslugi application. It is expected that it can be used to check into hotels and send parcels at post offices. Over time, the capabilities of the digital passport will expand.
