Chinese cars in Russia may get new cyber defense against hacks

Kaspersky Lab is working on protecting automotive information security from attackers

Chinese cars coming to Russia could be equipped with a new additional defense system from KasperskyOS

Attackers can hack the control system of a modern car that uses cloud solutions - even when the car owner is behind the wheel

As explained to "First Technical," the head of the platform solutions department based on KasperskyOS at Kaspersky Lab, Dmitry Lukian, the issue of a modern car's security is one of the pressing ones in the global community

The car, from being a mode of transportation, is becoming a gadget that uses cloud solutions and is therefore quite vulnerable. Attackers can hack the car's control system - even when the car owner is behind the wheel. That's why the global community at UN level has developed standard information security protocols for cars

Several global developers of tech solutions rely on these standards and develop products to protect cars from external cyberattacks. This includes the Russian 'Kaspersky Lab'

It is working on a cyber immune gateway for cars, which provides cyber protection for a connected car from attacks. It also allows remote information collection and secure over-the-air software updates of the car

Our gateway allows satisfying these [UN] requirements. There is interest in this technology from different countries. So in the near future, wait for an announcement about how and where this gateway will be used. This solution is based on KasperskyOS, which has cyber immunity. Cyber immunity means that the system will perform its actions even under active attacks on it, and resist the attack. The security gateway is in demand not only in the territory of the Russian Federation but also in other countries, as UN requirements cover a large number of countries. We are developing a universal platform that can work around the world and flexibly adapt to the requirements of car manufacturers from different countries. Developers in creating a gateway were guided not only by cybersecurity requirements but also functional safety requirements, and the foundation of the software platform uses the AUTOSAR international standard. Therefore, we initially focused on the global market.

Moreover, the gateway will be able to work on Chinese cars, which have recently become popular in Russia. According to Lukian, negotiations in this direction with some Chinese auto brands are already taking place

In 2023, developers of new technology at the World Internet Conference in China ranked in the top 15 global companies offering the most promising innovative solutions and received an award
