Chinese cars in Russia may receive new cyber protection against hacking

Kaspersky Lab is working on protecting the information security of cars from intruders

Chinese cars that enter Russia may in the future be equipped with new additional protection from KasperskyOS.

Attackers can hack into the control system of a modern car that uses cloud solutions even while the car owner is driving.

As Dmitry Lukiyan, Head of the Platform Solutions Department based on KasperskyOS at Kaspersky Lab, explained to Perviy Tekhnicheskiy, the security issues of a modern car are among the most pressing in the global community.

A car is turning from a means of transportation into a gadget that uses cloud solutions and is therefore very vulnerable. Attackers can hack into the car's control system - even while the car owner is driving. Therefore, the global community at the UN level has developed uniform standards for information security of cars.

A number of global developers of technological solutions rely on these standards and develop products to protect cars from cyberattacks from the outside. This also includes the Russian Kaspersky Lab.

It is working on a cyber-immune gateway for cars, which provides cyber protection for a connected car from attacks. It also allows you to remotely collect monitoring information and securely update the car's software "over the air."

Our gateway allows us to meet these requirements [UN - editor's note www1.ru]. There is interest in this technology from absolutely different countries. Therefore, in the near future, expect an announcement about how and where this gateway will be used. This is a solution based on KasperskyOS, which has cyber immunity. Cyber immunity means that the system will perform its actions even when actively attacked, and resist the attack. The security gateway is in demand not only in the Russian Federation, but also in other countries, since the UN requirements cover a large number of countries.

We are developing a universal platform that can work all over the world and flexibly adapt to the requirements of automakers from different countries. When creating the gateway, the developers focused not only on cybersecurity requirements, but also on functional safety requirements, and the international AUTOSAR standard is used as the basis of the software platform. Thus, we initially focused on the global market.

In addition, the gateway will be able to work on Chinese cars that have become popular in Russia recently. According to Lukiyan, negotiations in this direction with some Chinese car brands are already taking place.

In 2023, the developers of the new technology at the World Internet Conference in China were among the top 15 global companies that offered the most promising innovative solutions of the year. And they received an award.
