Russian company Lobaev Arms has begun testing a new sniper cartridge that could potentially reach speeds of over 1500 meters per second. This was reported to RIA Novosti by Vladislav Lobaev, head of the developing firm.
According to Lobaev, the cartridge is still in the "conditionally hypersonic" stage, as its speed is only on the verge of hypersonic for now. He emphasized that the final decision on the cartridge's category will be made after the completion of tests and determination of the characteristics of the serial product.
"Hypersonic starts at speeds over 1500 meters per second (above five times the speed of sound), while a high-speed sniper cartridge is considered to be one that travels at 900 meters per second," the gunsmith noted.
Previously, the hypersonic cartridge project was suspended due to the need to increase the serial production of existing weapons under state order. However, the resumed work is related to the active use of new 10x100 caliber cartridges by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These cartridges pose a serious threat, as they are capable of penetrating personal protective equipment at long distances even without the use of armor-piercing bullets.
Earlier, the manufacturer reported on the release of a sniper rifle for beginners.
