A semiconductor device for controlled emission of single photons has been created in Russia. It was developed by scientists from the Ioffe Institute (FTI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The device will find application in quantum computers.
"We have developed the first single-photon source in Russia. This device is a structure centered around a quantum dot - an artificial semiconductor object of extremely small size, possessing many properties of a single atom. Due to their unique characteristics, quantum dots are quantum objects that emit absolutely identical (indistinguishable) single photons, which can be used as qubits in quantum computing devices," - said Alexey Toropov, Head of the Laboratory of Quantum Photonics at the Ioffe Institute.
Quantum dots are "islands" of indium arsenide deposited on a multilayer semiconductor substrate, surrounded by gallium arsenide.
The research of scientists at the Ioffe Institute is carried out within the framework of the "Quantum Computing" Roadmap, developed by Rosatom and approved in July 2020.
As a reminder, theForum of Future Technologies will start in Russia next week, within the framework of which quantum technologies and their role in the technological development of the country will be discussed.
