Russia has revived a separate system for training military long-range aviation pilots. A new school began operating in Ulyanovsk on September 1, which will train pilots for long-range and military transport aviation.
The Ulyanovsk Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots (UVVAUL) was established in 2026 by separating from the Krasnodar School. Previously, there had been no separate higher education institution for training military pilots in the country since the USSR.
More than 1200 cadets are studying at the school since the beginning of the new academic year. It is planned to graduate about 150 officers annually. One of the key areas will be the training of long-range aviation pilots – Tu-95 and Tu-22M3.
It should be noted that in recent years, Russia has seen a trend towards restoring the operation of higher military schools. In August 2025, the NBC Protection School was revived in Saratov, and in January 2026, the Higher Tank Command School began its work in Chelyabinsk.
