The MC-21-310 has no relation to the Yakovlev project Yak-242, despite claims to the contrary. Aviation blogger SkyExpert drew attention to this topic amidst proposals to rename the MC-21.

He reminded that the Yak-242 was designed to accommodate up to 156 passengers and had a range of about 2700 km. However, the project did not go beyond drawings; in 1993, aircraft manufacturers had no money for full-fledged design or prototype construction.
The Yak-242 was not a finished project ready for production. The sketch described the concept of the aircraft, which was later refined and designed. Is the MC-21 the Yak-242? No. There was no Yak-242. There was a sketch with that project name, which served as the basis for creating another sketch.
As a result, the MC-21 received a different design, digital engineering, a composite wing, 2 PD-14 engines, and significantly increased in capacity and range. Work on the Yak-242 concept simply did not proceed until the development of the MC-21 began, so comparing the airliners is incorrect.
Vitaly Naryshkin, the chief designer of the MC-21-310, also denied a direct connection between the aircraft and the Yak-242.
