Scientists at Togliatti State University (TSU) have found a way to make aluminum as strong as structural steel. The technology can be in demand in aircraft manufacturing, the automotive industry, and shipbuilding.
Aluminum products are characterized by lightness and high corrosion resistance, but they have low wear resistance. Togliatti specialists solved this problem by chemical nickel plating of the part followed by laser processing.
The resulting coating is 6 times harder and 3 times more wear-resistant than the original material. At the same time, the treated surface is smooth and does not require additional grinding.
TSU Associate Professor Alexander Bochkarev stated that this method does not require complex and expensive equipment.
Chemical nickel plating is a long-established process, and laser installations are available in many production facilities. You can work with what you have and get parts that last longer.
Scientists plan to continue experiments with various types of aluminum alloys. They will also study the properties of the new coating in aggressive environments, including seawater.
