Yaroslavl Enterprise Launches Production of Heavy Diesel Engine YaMZ-770: Up to 2550 Nm and a Wide Range of Equipment

The new in-line six-cylinder engine is already being tested on trucks, agricultural machinery, and in marine applications

In the autumn of 2026, serial production of the new family of heavy YaMZ-770 diesel engines with a power output of up to 620 horsepower will begin. Production will be launched by the Yaroslavl Motor Plant, which has completed a large-scale modernization of its production facilities for one of the most ambitious projects in domestic engine building in recent years. This was reported by the publication "Tekhnosfera Rossiya".

By early summer, an assembly line was already operating at the enterprise, where the final assembly of engines and the preliminary assembly of cylinder heads are organized as separate production processes. At the same time, specialists are carrying out commissioning work on the machining line for cylinder blocks and heads.

The YaMZ-770 is a completely Russian in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 12.42 liters. The engine features a Common Rail direct fuel injection system with electronic control and pressure up to 2200 bar. Depending on the version, the compression ratio ranges from 17.5 to 20.

The family covers a wide range of characteristics. Engine power varies from 350 to 620 horsepower, and the maximum torque reaches 2550 Nm. Thanks to this, the new unit is designed for use in various segments of heavy equipment.

Structurally, the engine is made with cast iron block and cylinder head. The cylinder dimensions are 130×156 mm. Aluminum pistons are provided for modifications with power from 360 to 550 horsepower, while the most productive versions will receive steel pistons. The mass of the power unit is about one ton.

Tests of the new product are underway at several sites simultaneously. The diesel engine is being tested on Ural trucks, Valdai family vehicles, including Valdai-45 and Valdai-45 Pro models, as well as on MAZ equipment.

In parallel, the list of possible applications for the engine is expanding. Two prototypes are being prepared for installation on vessels of the Rybinsk Shipyard in a marine version. The use of the in-line six-cylinder engine in mining equipment is also being separately developed.
