In the Barents Sea, the crews of Ka-27 helicopters practiced takeoffs and landings on the large anti-submarine ship "Admiral Levchenko". The exercises were conducted by pilots of a separate shipborne anti-submarine helicopter regiment of the Northern Fleet as part of planned combat training.
The purpose of the training is to hone the coordination of aviation and ships in the open sea. Helicopters of the Ka-27M and Ka-27PS modifications performed takeoffs and landings from both a moving and a drifting ship. At the same time, the crews checked the operation of navigation systems and communication channels between the air group and the ship.
The flight shift lasted more than six hours. During this time, the pilots performed over 40 takeoff and landing cycles. Special emphasis was placed on flight safety in high latitudes: before landing, the helicopter approaches the ship, the pilot visually assesses the distance, then the machine hovers over the deck. Only after taking into account the wind, course, and speed of the vessel, the deck is touched.
Young specialists also participated in the exercises. After passing the theory and confirming basic skills under the supervision of experienced instructors, they began practical exercises in real open sea conditions.
