A competitor to GE and Rolls-Royce, the PD-35 engine, will be too expensive for the Il-96

The question of redesigning the long-range Il-96 aircraft for the PD-35 lies in the economic sphere. It will probably be cheaper to simply design a completely new airliner, "Perviy Technicheskiy" was told by aviation expert, editor-in-chief of Avia.ru Roman Gusarov.

He drew attention to the fact that no one is dealing with this issue yet, since the PD-35 does not yet physically exist. However, in theory, it all depends on whether the engine will fit under the wing of the PD-35 in principle.

The engine diameter there is more than three meters. It's huge. It might just lie on the ground and that's it. It may be necessary to lengthen the landing gear struts, and this requires reworking the entire design of the aircraft, the wing, center section. Again, the mounting points - it is necessary to redo the wing, because the PD-35 is heavy, you can't hang it just anywhere. So, you'll have to rework the entire wing structure.

Gusarov did not rule out that engineers will decide whether it makes sense to take something from the Il-96, or whether it is easier to make a new aircraft.

Probably, the fuselage will remain the same, but the rest will have to be rearranged. This work is comparable to creating a new aircraft.

It should be noted that there is no declared aircraft for the PD-35 yet. There were rumors that it could also be installed on a promising supersonic aircraft. The head of Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, stated in December 2025 that the state corporation expects to receive a type certificate for the PD-35 within two or three years.

The developer of the promising PD-35 engine is ODK-Aviadvigatel plant. The power plant will become the base for a promising family of turbofan dual-circuit engines in the thrust range from 24 to 38 tons.
