New SJ-100 Test Pilot Shirokikh: "The Aircraft is Safe and Reliable"

When landing on water, water does not enter the PD-8 engines

The new import-substituted SJ-100 "Superjet" aircraft is safe and reliable in operating conditions when landing on a runway with puddles. This was stated by test pilot, head of the flight test complex of the "Regional Aircraft" Branch of PJSC "Yakovlev" (part of the United Aircraft Corporation) Vadim Shirokikh.

According to him, the "Superjet" runs in the water "pool" showed that the PD-8 engines work well when water enters, without any problems, even with the reverse thrust on. This is an important stage of certification tests, which shows both the operability of the engines and the design of the aircraft as a whole.

We had to show that our engines are located relative to all parts of the aircraft, and first of all, the front landing gear, from which the main stream of spray comes, that this water does not get into the engines and does not interfere with its normal operation. We have proven this.

Shirokikh noted that there are many airports in Russia where it rains, where there are puddles on the runway, water on the runway.

Judging by what I saw in the cockpit and what my colleagues told me, the results are excellent. And once again I want to say that with these results we have proven that our aircraft is safe and reliable in these operating conditions.

The import-substituted "Superjet" with PD-8 engines, created as part of the import substitution program, has become one of the key projects of the updated line of Russian civil aviation. Successful tests in the "pool" confirm the aircraft's readiness for operation in all weather conditions.
