Scientists from the Obninsk-based enterprise "Tekhnologiya" named after A.G. Romashin (part of Rostec Group) have developed new fiberglass-reinforced plastics that ensure compliance with international standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for noise levels. The materials are used in sound-absorbing panels of PD-8 and PD-14 aircraft engines.
The development is based on multi-layer honeycomb structures with increased acoustic efficiency. When a sound wave passes through layers of different densities, it is scattered and partially dampened. This reduces the noise level of the jet engine to ICAO standards.
Fiberglass-reinforced plastics play a key role in the design — honeycomb fillers made of polymer binders and fiberglass fabric. At high temperatures and vibrations, they retain their shape and strength, which is critical for areas close to the nozzle and combustion chamber of the engine.
By 2030, Tekhnologiya will produce over 20,000 panels made of domestic composites for PD-14 and PD-8 engines.
Thus, Rostec's new materials make domestic engines environmentally and acoustically competitive at the level of world standards. This also reduces dependence on imports and allows localizing the production of components by 100%.
