In Russia, 328 cyberattacks on cars were recorded in eight months of 2025, which is 20% more than the year before. This is stated in a study by JSC "Glonass" and the company "Transport Security Technologies".
Most attacks (93%) were carried out remotely, and 85% of them were through vulnerabilities in Bluetooth and cloud systems, which allowed attackers to intercept control of the car or even steal it.
Experts note that SDV (software car functions by subscription, such as autopilot) and AV (autonomous driving systems) technologies are becoming increasingly attractive targets. Hacking such systems can lead to serious accidents, warns Vladimir Pedanov, head of cybersecurity for vehicles at JSC "Glonass": "All of the above vulnerabilities lead to loss of control over vehicles and pose a threat to the safety of drivers."
According to insurers, cyberattacks are not directly covered by either compulsory motor insurance or comprehensive insurance, but damage from an accident as a result of hacking can be compensated as in ordinary accidents. In the next 5–10 years, experts expect the emergence of specialized cyber insurance for automakers and, possibly, for car owners.
The increase in the number of attacks directly reflects new risks to the safety of drivers and passengers. Without the development of cyber protection, the automotive industry and the insurance market risk facing large-scale threats in the coming years.
