Gazprom Neft has launched the production of Russian aviation fuel with a reduced carbon footprint — SAF fuel. The introduction of this new product into mass use will help reduce the negative impact of air transportation on the environment.
The next step in the implementation of Russian SAF fuel will be laboratory and bench tests in leading aviation institutes of the country.
The development of domestic SAF fuel was carried out by specialists from the technological center of industrial innovations of Gazprom Neft in St. Petersburg. During research and laboratory tests, a formula was created based on aviation kerosene with the addition of a biocomponent. The composition of the new product meets medium-term environmental standards for international air transportation.
Gazprom Neft's own technology is based on the synthesis of complex esters from renewable organic raw materials under the influence of hydrogen. As a result, from used frying oil and animal fats, the company's specialists obtain biocomponents that are comparable in performance to traditional aviation fuel and have increased environmental characteristics.
SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) is aviation fuel with a low carbon footprint, produced on the basis of complex esters and fatty acids. The use of SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air transportation by up to 80%.
