The Eta Aquarids meteor shower, also known as the May Aquarids, will reach its peak activity on the night of May 6. In clear weather, fast and bright meteors can be seen. For the best observation, it is better to move away from city lights, the press service of the Moscow Planetarium reported.
The meteors of the May Aquarids are fast and bright, leaving long trails, like the October Orionids. <...> It is best to observe meteors in the pre-dawn hours (from 2:00 to 4:00 Moscow time) away from city lights.
The planetarium clarified that such flashes are usually white.
Experts drew attention to the fact that the speed of meteors reaches 67 kilometers per second. In the middle latitudes, flashes in the sky, or the radiant, will be visible low above the southeastern horizon a few hours before dawn.
The source of this stream is the dust trail of Halley's Comet. Twice a year, in spring and autumn, our planet passes through it. Dust particles burning up in the Earth's atmosphere create bright flashes in the sky.
Russians could observe apowerful meteor shower during the New Year holidays. The Quadrantids meteor shower peaked on the night of January 4. In terms of the number of "falling stars," it was comparable to the most powerful December Geminids meteor shower in 2024.
