The "Roselectronica" holding (part of the Rostec State Corporation) has transferred a batch of R-86 surge arresters to the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) for the Il-114-300 regional aircraft being developed. The equipment will protect the aircraft's onboard equipment from lightning strikes and other powerful electromagnetic pulses.
The surge arresters can withstand a static voltage of 8 to 12 kilovolts, and a dynamic voltage of up to 20 kilovolts, which will maintain the operability of the aircraft's equipment during powerful electrical impulses, such as lightning strikes and induced lightning overvoltages.
One of the distinctive features of the R-86 surge arresters is that the discharge develops along the device through the air, and not inside it, which significantly increases the service life of the products and increases their reliability. The latter is extremely important in the case of using sensitive aviation equipment. By the end of 2025, the company plans to transfer another batch of products to the customer.
A surge arrester is an element of an electrical circuit that is designed to combat overvoltage. According to the idea, the device is the weakest point in the electrical circuit, thanks to which it takes on an electrical impulse, protecting expensive equipment from short circuits.
