Footage of the damaged Diamond DA42 appeared online the day before, after the capital of Tatarstan, Kazan, was hit by thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail, and a tornado passed near Kazan.
[...] At about 15:00 Moscow time, a tornado passed through the area of Nizhnekamsk Airport (Begishevo; ICAO code: UWKE). As a result of the tornado, according to preliminary data, the following were damaged at the airport: four Diamond DA42 training aircraft from the fleet of the St. Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation; a private helicopter; several pieces of apron equipment; a number of structures at the airfield.
PJSC "KAMAZ", whose subsidiary is the airport, notes that passenger planes were not affected during the storm. Passenger transportation, acceptance and departure of aircraft continued on schedule, and the airport continued and continues to operate as normal. The damage is still being calculated.
Diamond DA42 training aircraft have been produced in Russia under license since 2013 at the Ural Civil Aviation Plant (UZGA). Initially, the developer of the light twin-engine four-seater turboprop Diamond Aircraft carried out their licensed assembly there from foreign components. In 2021, UZGA itself released the first Diamond DA42 in a full cycle without foreign parts.
