Engine repairs for major military equipment are now also being carried out near the front lines. According to the press service of the Ministry of Defense, work on the restoration, repair, and modernization of equipment isbeing conducted around the clock. A serviceman of the Russian Armed Forces, the commander of a repair company with the call sign "Sable," spoke about how this is happening.
According to him, after a vehicle breaks down, it is evacuated by a special repair and evacuation group. The equipment arrives at the SPPM (collection point for damaged vehicles) for repair and restoration. At the same time, the SPPM has been working for 5-6 months not only with the hull and other parts but also with engines. There are also specialists in weapons repair.
After dismantling the engine from the damaged vehicles, we give these units, engines, and gearboxes to the unit for repairing units and assemblies. They inspect them, see what is wrong, and if the engine block itself is not damaged, we replace everything else ourselves. Accordingly, we restore both engines and gearboxes. This, of course, increases the repair time itself, but it reduces the repair resource. We do not involve factories in the manufacture of engines and gearboxes for equipment; we restore everything ourselves. We also receive vehicles with faulty weapons, fire control systems, and we repair the electrical installation kit. We have highly qualified electricians in our companies, a separate company for the repair of automotive equipment, and a company for the repair of armored vehicles, which specifically deal with electrical wiring faults.
In parallel with this, other repair work is being carried out on the damaged vehicle. For example, the T-72B, which was stationed at the SPPM after evacuation, required the dismantling of the turret, the dismantling of the fuel tank, the welding of the fuel tank, and in reverse order - the installation of the fuel tank, the installation of the turret. Now it awaits welding and straightening work on the turret, and the installation of additional dynamic protection.
