To operate on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) by 2030, 160 high ice-class vessels are needed (one of the parameters of a vessel, showing its ability to be at sea depending on the severity of ice conditions — editor's note www1.ru), according to a presentation by Vyacheslav Ruksha, Deputy Director of Rosatom. The materials were presented in the lower house of parliament during an expert council dealing with the development of the NSR.
According to the presentation, the NSR lacks 50 coastal vessels (sailing between ports of the same state) of ice classes Arc 4-7. For the northern delivery (providing residents of the Far North and the Far East with essential goods), 10 universal vessels of ice class Arc 5 will be needed. In the segment of bulk cargo transportation (transportation of goods in bulk), 3 medium-tonnage vessels of class Arc 4 and 25 large-tonnage vessels of class Arc 5 are needed.
By 2030, the following are also needed:
- 15 container ships of class Arc 7
- 39 tankers for the transportation of liquefied natural gas and gas condensate
- 11 large-tonnage oil tankers
Currently, 30 vessels operate on the Northern Sea Route, and Russian shipbuilders are building 33 vessels. According to Rosatom's assessment, at least 97 more vessels will be needed in six years.
