The "Olenya" airbase is a Soviet and Russian military airfield for long-range military aviation. The facility houses strategic long-range bombers Tu-22M3 and Tu-95MS.
"Olenya" is located 92 km south of the city of Murmansk on the Kola Peninsula, near the city of Olenegorsk. The military settlement at the Vysokiy airfield is administratively subordinate to the city of Olenegorsk.
"Olenya" was built in the mid-1950s in a mountainous area at an altitude of about 200 meters above sea level. During the construction of the airfield, bulldozers cut off the tops of the hills, as the ends of the runway rested against them, and the hardest sections were blown up. The length of the runway (RWY) is 3500 m, and the surface is reinforced concrete.
The runway itself has a downward deflection in the center, so the height difference at the end and in the middle is 12 meters. Initially, the runway did not have end and side safety strips, and boulders lay to the left and right of the runway, which posed a great danger in the event of an aircraft leaving the runway during takeoff or landing.
The day before, information appeared that the Aerospace Forces (VKS) of Russia had transferred to the "Olenya" airfield in the Murmansk region about 40 long-range Tu-22M3 bombers, as well as about 20% of all available Tu-95MS over the past two weeks.
