It became known what difficulties UEC faced in developing the PD-8 aircraft engine

The power plant successfully withstood overloads at an altitude of 12.2 thousand meters

The tenth flight of the third prototype of the import-substituted version of the SJ-100 aircraft with PD-8 engines has been completed in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. It lasted 3 hours 20 minutes, the aircraft reached a speed of 0.81 Mach and stayed at an altitude of 12.2 thousand meters for 2.5 hours. At such altitudes, overloads and speeds, the PD-8 engines as part of the SJ-100 aircraft were tested for the first time.

UEC General Designer Yuri Shmotin revealed the design solutions that made it possible to create the new domestic PD-8 aircraft engine. According to him, Russia had not previously created such gas turbine engines, and the time frame in which the engineers managed to develop the PD-8 engine exceeds everything that had been done before.

If we turn to some specific technologies that we have really mastered in recent years, this is the technology of a wide-chord working fan blade. The use of a bladeless fan blade allows for greater efficiency and performance of the low-pressure compressor fan with fewer blades.

The next difficult step was the use of hollow fan blade technologies in the cold section, which significantly reduced weight. The same technology is used today on the modern PD-14 gas turbine engine.

For this, the nozzle and working blades of the low and high pressure turbines of the PD-8 were made of the latest domestic heat-resistant alloys with a number of properties.

In addition, another difficulty in the project was the development of the SAU-8 engine control system. The automatic control system is the brain of the engine, regulating its operation before, during and after the flight.

Creating a modern gas turbine engine control system from scratch in the shortest possible time and completing such a colossal amount of work, as well as software, has never been done before.
