More than a third of Russians have not changed the password for their home router: what could this lead to?

If an attacker gains access to the router, they will at least be able to control the flow of incoming and outgoing information

According to a Kaspersky Lab survey, more than a third of Russians (39%) who have Wi-Fi at home have never changed their router password. Almost one in five (18%) did so, but not immediately. Only 27% updated the data shortly after purchase.

If an attacker gains access to the router, they can potentially control all information flows of incoming and outgoing information, in which case this will lead to the compromise of the device owner's confidential data. Also, an attacker can change other network settings, such as a DNS server or routing.

In addition, the router can become a starting point for an attack on the "internal infrastructure" connected to it, that is, on computers and devices that are not directly accessible from the Internet, Daschenko noted. Therefore, when installing the router, you must immediately change the pre-installed password to a complex and unique combination. It is also important to regularly check for updates for the router.

When choosing a router for home use, it is important to consider the supported Wi-Fi standard. Currently, the most modern and popular standard in the mass segment is Wi-Fi 6. Unlike previous versions, it provides a higher data transfer rate. This was stated by Nikolai Pulich, director of the unified procurement department of Merlion and Citilink.

In addition, we recommend paying attention to the presence of gigabit ports, advanced software and the power of the router's processor. It will also be useful to have a USB port on the router for connecting an external USB modem with a SIM card for connecting to the Internet outside the city.

Considering the question of the durability of routers and their ability to maintain operability for a long time, it is worth noting that regular updating of the built-in software is one of the key aspects. This allows you to resist new cyber threats.

Also, the reliability of routers is positively affected by their adaptation to the Russian market and work with domestic telecom operators, as well as the availability of Russian-language online support and a warranty period from the equipment manufacturer.

Earlier it became known that hackers have found a vulnerability in the router security system. She is responsible for Wi-Fi access. Attackers were able to illegally connect to private networks. They can intercept traffic, including confidential data and user information.
