Kazakhstan may become a new operator of Chinese K-8W combat training aircraft after refusing to purchase Russian Yak-130s. The company "Kazspetsexport" held working negotiations with the Chinese corporation CATIC.

In total, the republic plans to acquire six aircraft. The delivery schedule was set for 26 months. Within the first 18 months, the aircraft must be fully ready for factory acceptance.

Earlier, media reported that Kazakhstan was interested in the Yak-130. The parties discussed a possible deal, but the Ministry of Defence of the republic ultimately showed no interest in the aircraft. Instead, Astana focused on modernizing its existing Czech L-39s.

In addition to Russia, Yak-130 combat training aircraft are in service with Algeria, Iran, Belarus, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Laos. Media also reported on the first deliveries to Ethiopia.
