Plans to produce the Russian passenger aircraft SJ-100 in India have met with a mixed reaction from the local aviation industry. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is considering establishing licensed production of the Russian airliner, but Indian carriers and experts point to a number of factors that could complicate its market promotion. This is reported by IDRW.
For HAL, the project is important as an attempt to revive passenger aircraft production in India. The company expects to use the SJ-100 on regional routes and gradually create its own production base for aircraft of this class.
However, the transition from agreements to actual production will require certification, preparation of enterprises, organization of component supplies, and creation of a maintenance system.
The commercial side of the project has become one of the main reasons for disputes. Indian airlines already have a wide selection of aircraft for regional transportation, and when making a purchase decision, they evaluate not only the price of the aircraft itself but also fuel costs, maintenance, availability of spare parts, and crew training. Therefore, the Russian SJ-100 will have to prove its economic efficiency in real operation.
An additional question remains how quickly a full-fledged service infrastructure can be created around the aircraft. For a new type of aircraft, airlines need the availability of spare parts, repair centers, and specialists capable of servicing the equipment throughout its entire service life. Without such a system, even an attractive aircraft price may not be a sufficient argument for carriers.
At the same time, the Indian market may indeed be of interest for the SJ-100. HAL estimates the country's need for regional aircraft of this class at more than 200 units over the next decade.
For the Russian SJ-100, the Indian direction remains one of the most prominent foreign projects. If HAL can move from preliminary agreements to a full-fledged production program, India will become not only a potential sales market but also a platform for the production of the Russian regional aircraft.
