Russia has begun implementing agreements on the construction of a small modular nuclear power plant in Myanmar. The start of the project was announced by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin during a meeting with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing.

According to the head of government, the project will become a new symbol of Russian-Myanmar friendship.

We are starting to implement agreements on the construction of a small modular nuclear power plant in Myanmar. I am confident that this project will give a powerful impetus to the development of cooperation in related fields, including fundamental and applied scientific research.
Mikhail Mishustin, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation

The small capacity of the plant became the main feature of the project — 110 MW with a built-in technical possibility of expansion to 330 MW.

Such nuclear installations are considered a more compact option for energy supply compared to traditional large nuclear power plants and can be used where the construction of a giant power unit is economically or infrastructurally redundant.
