The main construction of a large mining and processing enterprise in the Arctic has been completed. It will extract platinum and palladium, which are important raw materials for high-tech industries. The RT-Engineering holding of Rostec State Corporation built the plant at the Chernogorskoye deposit in the permafrost zone.

Technical Launch

The enterprise has already undergone a technical launch. The plant is planned to be put into commercial operation at the end of 2026.

Currently, the coarse crushing plant, conveyor gallery, and ore storage facility have started operating at the site. During testing, the complex processed over 300 tons of overburden without target metals. Commissioning works are currently ongoing.

Millions of tons of ore and a huge resource base

The first stage of the enterprise is designed to process up to 9 million tons of ore per year. It is expected to produce up to 250 thousand tons of copper-nickel concentrate with platinum group metals.

In the future, after the development of the Norilsk-1 deposit, capacities may increase to 14 million tons of ore and 55 tons of platinum group metals per year. The project's resource base is estimated to last for more than 50 years.

How valuable metals will be extracted from ore

The plant will use gravity-flotation enrichment. This technology separates useful fractions from rock using air bubbles and reagents due to the difference in particle density.

Dry tailings storage is provided for waste. Instead of traditional liquid settling ponds, they will be dewatered using filter presses. This approach is expected to reduce the load on the Arctic ecosystem.

Arctic and the Northern Sea Route

Construction was carried out in difficult conditions: harsh climate, permafrost, and logistical constraints.

Construction was completed in a short time, and due to sanctions, the factory had to be redesigned and all equipment replaced. The construction region is one of the most challenging, it is the Arctic, with a harsh climate, logistical constraints, and permafrost. All materials and equipment were delivered primarily via the Northern Sea Route year-round. Commissioning works are currently underway.

After the technical launch of the first part of the processing complex, comprehensive testing and commissioning of the entire enterprise remain ahead.
