The market for hybrid and electric vehicles in Russia almost doubled in the first half of the year. As reported by TASS in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, sales amounted to 54.3 thousand units — an increase of 90.7% compared to the same period last year.

The statistics reveal a paradox: only 4.9 thousand "pure" electric vehicles were sold — an increase of 8%. The main surge came from hybrids. The share of Russian assembly in this segment jumped to 27.3% against last year's 9.4%, with almost half of the electric cars sold being produced in the Russian Federation. In total, hybrids and electric vehicles now account for almost 8% of the new car market, compared to 5.4% a year earlier.

The market is growing from a low base, but the pace indicates a shift in consumer preferences. A hybrid removes the main fear of an electric car owner — "getting stuck without an outlet" — and at the same time provides fuel savings. Dealers are recording a rush demand for hybrid crossovers of Chinese brands, which are filling the niche left vacant after the departure of Japanese and European brands.
