AvtoVAZ head Maxim Sokolov stated in an interview with TASS at the SPIEF that hybrid vehicles are more promising for the Russian market than pure electric vehicles. According to him, considering the long distances, climatic zones, and traditional cold weather, hybrids are a more adaptable model. Last year's sales data, he noted, already confirm this trend.
The technical logic behind this statement is straightforward: in freezing temperatures, the capacity of the traction battery drops by 40–50%, and the range of an electric vehicle is significantly reduced, whereas a hybrid with an internal combustion engine maintains mobility and does not require charging infrastructure on the road.
Sokolov emphasized that AvtoVAZ continues to work on electric prototypes e-Aura and e-Niva, but the key focus is on the hybrid version of Lada Azimut.
Thus, the largest Russian automaker has officially confirmed a strategic shift: electricity remains within the experimental design framework, while serial expansion will follow the hybrid path, which allows for independence from charging infrastructure and climatic limitations.
