Starting from the 2026/2027 academic year, the Moscow Aviation Institute will launch Russia's first basic educational program aimed at training design engineers for unmanned aerial systems (UAS). This was announced by the university. The program will be a pilot project within the framework of modernizing the higher education system.
The key partners of the initiative are Rostec, Tekhnodinamika, as well as UZGA, Smartindustriya, and TSARS. Together, they will help structure the training so that future engineers cover the full cycle of tasks in the UAS field: from design and production to the development of application scenarios and after-sales service.
MAI explained that previously, students studied drones optionally, through individual educational tracks. Now, the training will become systemic and in-depth. From the first year, students will be involved in working on real industry projects, for which the institute's infrastructure – stands for design, testing, and certification – will be used.
Rostec noted that the new program should address the personnel shortage in the rapidly growing UAS industry, and partnership with universities will allow training specialists for specific industrial tasks. MAI added that the pilot training format will become the basis for replicating the model in other engineering fields.
