Perm Machine-Building Plant has for the first time launched serial production of ship shafts made of carbon fiber. These innovative products are three times lighter than traditional metal counterparts, significantly reduce noise levels, and are completely non-magnetic.
Until now, Russian industry did not produce ship shafts from composite materials. The new VMK-60-1 model is designed to transmit torque from the main engine to the propeller and is intended for use on vessels of various classes.
The main difference of the new design is its significantly lower mass. The carbon fiber shaft weighs about 300 kilograms, while a similar metal product reaches one ton. In addition to reducing weight, the composite design reduces ship noise and has no magnetic properties, which expands its application possibilities.
The development became part of the import substitution program. Previously, Russian enterprises purchased similar ship shafts from German companies Centa and Vulcan. After the cessation of supplies in 2022, the industry was forced to look for alternative suppliers in Asia. Now, the domestic manufacturer expects to fully meet domestic demand, provided the product is competitive in price and quality.
Alexey Zakharov, Chief Designer of Perm Machine-Building Plant, reported that the plant's production capacities allow for the manufacture of composite shafts of almost any length and diameter for ships and vessels of any displacement.
