Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reveals main schemes for stealing Russians' data: from intercom to OGE and fake parcels

The range of pretexts is wide, the final goal is to trick people into revealing SMS codes to access accounts

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has published a list of the most popular pretexts used by fraudsters to extract confidential data from citizens. As reported by RIA "Novosti" in the ministry's press service, criminals actively exploit topics such as extending communication contracts, installing intercoms, replacing medical policies, registering for exams, or accruing social benefits.

In addition to using social engineering under "state cover," criminals stage a delivery play. Scammers call pretending to be employees of courier services or marketplaces and report a supposedly pending parcel. To confirm a convenient delivery date and address, the victim is asked to dictate a code from the received SMS. This code actually gives criminals access to authorize in the victim's key online services.

The received code most often serves as a key to log in to the personal account on the "Gosuslugi" portal or to online banking. Everyone who is used to confirming operations by phone without reading the message carefully is at risk. To protect yourself, it is enough to remember: real delivery services and government agencies never request SMS codes to confirm registration or process payments.
