The car won't start if there's an alcohol smell in the cabin: Russia is preparing a new safety system

They want to block car engines due to alcohol fumes in the cabin

Russia is preparing a new safety system for cars that has not existed before. If alcohol fumes are detected in the car's cabin, the engine may be blocked. The car simply won't allow a trip to start if a special device determines that the driver is under the influence of alcohol. RIA Novosti reports on the development of such a system, citing a relevant document.

The Government of the Russian Federation has instructed several ministries and agencies to develop the new technology. Rosstandart, Minpromtorg, Mintrans, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Mintsifry are involved in the project.

The technology will be implemented as part of the Road Safety Improvement Strategy in Russia. The document is designed for the period until 2030, but if necessary, it can be extended until 2036.

The Strategy itself mentions "determining the criteria for applying engine start blocking systems in case of alcohol vapors in exhaled air." Such devices are also called alcohol interlocks.

The state will have to determine exactly how such systems should work, where and in what cases they can be applied, what requirements should be imposed on them, and how they will be used in transport.

But it's not limited to alcohol. According to the same strategy, Russia plans to create a system that can collect information about the driver's condition. It should detect signs of drowsiness or distraction from the road.

In addition, Russia plans to develop a device for remote monitoring of vehicle speed, driving style, and compliance with work and rest regimes. Such control is proposed to be applied taking into account the potential risks of operating different types of vehicles and different types of transportation.
