"There is no other way": India may create an orbital station similar to "Mir" or "Salyut"

IMEMO RAS expert: It is difficult to develop something new without considering the achievements of the USSR and Russia

When developing the "Bharatiya Antariksh" orbital station, India may take the Soviet "Salyut" and "Mir" or segments of the International Space Station (ISS) as a model. This opinion was expressed by Petr Topychkanov, head of the New Challenges in Southeast Asia Sector at the Center for the Indian Ocean Region of IMEMO RAS.

I think that, by and large, India has no other way, because it is difficult to create something new and exclusively Indian without taking into account the achievements of the USSR and Russia.

Other countries also use Soviet developments. For example, the Chinese station "Tiangong" is structurally similar to the Soviet "Mir", the expert recalled.

India needs help to launch a heavy spacecraft into orbit. Therefore, the country is interested in cooperation with Russia, Topychkanov concluded.

New Delhi plans to launch the first module of the "Bharatiya Antariksh" orbital station in 2028. Full operation of the facility in orbit will begin in 2035. Scientific research will be conducted there and astronauts will be trained.
