In Tuapse, a large-scale cleanup of the coast after an oil spill continues, but there are still not enough volunteers. According to ecologist Zhora Kovanosyan, work on the central city beach is ongoing around the clock, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to cope with the situation – the sea regularly brings in new pollution.
The incident was caused by events on the night of April 16: as a result of a drone attack, the infrastructure of the sea terminal was damaged, followed by a fire. Oil products entered the Tuapse River, and then – into the Black Sea.
Heavy rains exacerbated the situation – due to the rise in water levels, the pollution was partially carried from the river to the coast.
The ecologist warns that fuel oil may soon appear on other resort beaches – in Agoy, Nebug, Olginka, and Novomikhailovsky.
Local residents also complain about the consequences of the pollution: there is a smell of burning in the air, and an oily film remains on cars and clothes. In some areas, an excess concentration of harmful substances was recorded.
Help is needed not only on the beaches. At animal rescue centers, volunteers wash birds, dogs, and cats affected by fuel oil. There is a shortage of people, especially for heavy physical work. After treatment, temporary owners are sought for the animals.
According to the latest data, more than 3 thousand cubic meters of contaminated soil have already been collected in Tuapse. More than 130 people and 26 units of equipment are involved in the work – employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, "Kuban-SPAS" and other services.
Constant monitoring of emissions is carried out on the coastline. Experts note that the pollution is still localized, but the situation remains tense. The authorities plan to attract additional forces and urge volunteers to join the work.
