A record 34 billion lawsuit: tanker owners will be forced to pay for fuel oil in the Black Sea

The owners and charterers of Volgoneft were summoned to court

The Ministry of Natural Resources of Krasnodar Krai has filed a lawsuit against the owners and charterer of the tankers Volgoneft-239 and Volgoneft-212 to recover a total of 34.25 billion rubles in environmental damage. The hearing has been scheduled for February 24, according to the records of the Arbitration Court of Krasnodar Krai.

According to the case file materials, the defendants are ZAO Volgatransneft (owner of Volgoneft-239), OOO Kamatransoil (owner of Volgoneft-212), and OOO Kama Shipping (charterer of the vessel).

The third parties involved in the case are the Prosecutor General's Office, the State Public Institution of Krasnodar Krai "Regional Center for Geological Information, Monitoring of the Geological Environment and Mineral Reserves \"Kubangeologiya\"", and Kuban State University.

On December 15, 2024, the tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, which were carrying about 9,200 tonnes of fuel oil, were wrecked in the Kerch Strait. A significant amount of petroleum products entered the Black Sea. A federal-level state of emergency was declared in Krasnodar Krai.
