Rosatom awaits response from Rostov Region regarding new NPP

Deputy Governor proposed expanding the existing nuclear power plant in Volgodonsk

The government of the Rostov Region has not yet responded to the Rosatom State Corporation's request regarding potential sites for the construction of the South NPP. This was announced at a press conference by the First Deputy Governor Vladimir Revenko.

According to him, the corporation sent an official letter requesting a decision on the location. Among the proposed options was the territory near the Novocherkassk SDPP. However, the regional authorities have not yet made any decision and have not even sent a response.

Revenko expressed his personal opinion: he believes it is more reasonable to expand the already operating Rostov NPP in Volgodonsk to six power units instead of four.

The official emphasized that there is no shortage of electricity in the Rostov Region itself — a shortage of capacity is observed in other regions of southern Russia.

Earlier, Deputy General Director of Rosenergoatom Concern Alexander Khvalko stated that the territory near the Novocherkassk SDPP was chosen as the preliminary site for the South NPP. According to him, a protocol of intent has already been signed with the regional government, and the Volgodonsk option is no longer being considered. It is planned to build two power units of 1200 MW each in 2036–2039.

Deputy Governor Igor Sorokin, in turn, clarified that the decision on Novocherkassk is not yet final and requires additional analysis.
